Costas Profile

NameCostas Stephens
TownThessaloniki
ProfileI was born in Thessaloniki and my family moved to Athens when I was 14.

I lived there until the age of 21 and then left Greece for good and moved to England where
I married Amanda, the girl I fell in love with two years earlier on Mykonos.

Almost 30 years later we came back to Greece because the pull of the sun, sea and... other things was too strong to resist.

I was a silversmith and jeweller when I was young but could not support a family on the miserly income of a smith. I changed direction and got involved in the production of walnut interiors for classic and vintage cars in the heyday of classic car restoration.

Eventually that sector died down and I started using my linguistic skills in translation and interpreting until we decided to come to Greece. Ever since then I have been running a shop in Agiou Dimitriou street (next to the Turkish Consulate) selling hifi equipment and vinyl records and CDs which I source in the UK.

This allows me at last to spend the greater part of my days with music, for which I have had a passion almost my entire life. I am very much a product of the hippy era and therefore rock is and always will be my musical home.

I too listen to all kinds of music but deplore the kind that compels one to end it all by pulling out a cutlass and severing vital arteries or that is drenched in self pity and blame shifting (alas, that is the proper description for 99% of Greek popular music so there).

I am a very keen Harley Davidson rider and Amanda and I never miss an opportunity to jump on the bike and hit the road. Greece is the perfect country for that (if of course we were to ignore for a moment the legendary awfulness of the Greek driver). So far so good.
